The Re-Rat: Toledo, Spain June 9, 2012

“Anyone can rat…

but it takes a certain amount of ingenuity to re-rat”

– Winston Churchill

When we landed in Madrid none of us knew how to use our cell phones. There’s no free wifi so we couldn’t do any internet sms/mms or voip to contact our tour manager. Left to our own devices, or lack of,  I recall Howie found himself a Fanta. Patty being the traveller of the group, broke away and did her own thing. I sat on my bag on the floor and gathered dirty looks from passersby. We looked around for Dany of Microsurco Booking, but no one fit the profile… lots of soccer shirts and German tourists.

A voice at the revolving exit doors zapped us out of our daze. “Rats?”

There was our guy. Ex-law student, eccentric fringe dweller and Rock n Roll fanatic / booker Dany Torres. We didnt recognize him right away because his shoulder length hair was different from pictures we had seen. Warm gestures, hugs and handshakes later, we jumped in the van and drove past a busty bronze statue of a woman with a bull. We all howled “TOR-O” and it became a meme for the rest of the 18 day tour…

Leaving Madrid Airport for Toledo

When we stopped for gas at a Repsol I swore I would get a Repsol t-shirt before the end of tour, but I never did it. Howie got a Fanta. I got a Mahou cervesa. There are only 1 or 2 kinds of beer in each region of Spain. It was kind of nice to not have to choose.

I think each of us had a “slap-yourself” moment as we drove through the gate at the old walls of Toldeo. Definitely not in Kansas anymore.. Man-oh-man there is a LOT of OLD STUFF in Spain. We did some parking and found the Explorers Club in Plaza Horno de la Magdalena. It looked kind of like a Masonic Temple or something real Indiana-Jonesy…

Plaza Horno de la Magdalena

The venue was kind of a museum, probably designed after the Explorers Club in Manhattan, but with a theme that there were Explorers Clubs across the globe.

We played with a local band who had a really punchy aggro sound. The singer got a huge kick out of saying “motherfucker” in English, over and over, and the whole club would be laughing every time he said it. Some of their riffs were even a bit Ashton-esque.

People seemed to like our set better when my amp broke. A little blood-letting never hurts. Someone yelled “Take your clothes off!” for dramatic effect. People were starting to dance and holler and get real kooky. You got the sense that the night was about to blast off.

There was a smart little afterparty at a disco across town. Angel, the keys-man of Las Aspiradoras was Deejaying.

Did you know there is actually a St. Satan street in Toledo? Crazy world, huh?

A local classical pianist who followed us from the gig to the afterparty was asking how to get into Rock n Roll. I told him maybe he should go to that street and wait for a sign.

Callejon del Diablo, Toledo. The street signs are ceramic like this. No room for poles

Toledo people were kind and got us all sorts of nice things to drink, and Angel let us crash at his flat in the city.

Lots of thanks to everyone for coming out and making it a bash. Best paella too.

Hey Hey Ratso where ya been? Winter ’11 – ’12

Dear Friends

A lot has happened since our last jot, back in Nov ’11.

We’ve been playing in some great DIY spaces but promoting sparingly, as theres been a massive police crackdown lately on loft concerts. Check out this article in Village Voice:

http://www.villagevoice.com/2011-12-28/music/new-yorks-crackdown-on-brooklyn-diy-spaces/

Some of our shows over the Winter included Death By Audio with Boats during their ’11 tour with The Damned, and other keen parties in NYC, Montreal and Washington DC

diy space, nyc 11-12

If anyone has missed our text messages and email notices regarding the underground shows please shoot us an email to theratsnyc(at)gmail to get on the list.

In other news, FDR aka Jeff on guitar (aka JefFDR) has recently had a pizza joint launched in his honor, and he and his wife/partner Jay have given birth to an uber-moxy boy child, the young master Desmond

Kitty G. Litter has been sealing our third book deal, licensing the lyrics of Let’s Keep It Superficial, again in the noir genre this time to be included in Deb Koontz’ latest novella about Las Vegas (other inclusions of The Rats NYC in suspense-fiction were by New York Times bestselling authors Jon Land and William Martin)

Other projects currently include The Rats of New York Fingerbang Gang video with cameos by Anna Copacabanna, Patrick Salt Ryan and Twin Guns. Editing by David Horowitz (The Above) and Pele Kudren is in final stages… to be released on vinyl 7″ tba

Jake Rat continues to grind the wheels of the Othermen’s video for Axe Cop with a cameo appearance by burlesque idol Amber Ray, editing the digital footage while waiting for Double 8mm film takes to get developed and transferred by a lab in Massachusetts. He also continues as a producer for Puta Records, managing production of No Red Tape Volume II (compiled by Brian Chillemi of Organs, and art by Charles Gaskins of Killer Diller & Siberians fame). The cassettes are currently available at Other Music, Kims Video, and coming soon to Earwax & Academy Records Brooklyn.

After helping out with renovations at Jonny Airis’ recording loft Terminal New York, Jakes been serving an intensive internship under a master Sommelier at Corkbuzz Wine Studio, running plates for Chef Hiyan Yi (Le Bernardin / Daniel), fetching bottles and living life at cellar temperature as any self-respecting rat should. You can see Jake’s food & wine column in the Street & Sweet PORK Magazine, published by Sean Aaberg of Goblinko, in Issue #5 featuring John Homstrom (PUNK Magazine), Gavin McInnes (Co-Founder of VICE Magazine), Hunx & His Punx, Andy Human, Shannon & The Clams and others.

We held a holiday bash at Chez Rat of Alphabet City-Manhattan, sibling duo Keith Masco and Pee Wee of Passout Records kept the turntables spinning and in attendance members of The Lovely, The Othermen, Madame Robot, Dirty Shames and Djs Xerox (Copycat) & Jumpy among a gaggle of debutantes, germs & gents.

Cocktails included Rachel Leather’s rum cider punch (Heavy Leather), Kir Royales w/ Rosemary, and The Chechnyan (born on X-Mas eve, a Bourbon Manhattan with crushed Sage and Creme de Cassis)
